January 2024 started in Queenstown, New Zealand, with an awesome New Year’s Eve celebration I’ll never forget, and on New Year’s Day, we toured glaciers by helicopter and had a picnic atop a mountain next to said helicopter, and it was awesome. July started with camping out on our land by the Little Tallapoosa River in Alabama for the holiday weekend, including time on Lake Wedowee. A few days later, we picked up our son from camp and went out on Lake Lanier with friends before driving up to Nashville for a legal conference for a few days before all 3 children went off to camp for 2 weeks (we did our first family “escape room” experience before they left) on the eldest’s 17th birthday. For 2021’s final month, we started by taking the trip to Disneyland planned for May 2020; we learned to ride (and subsequently bought) a motorcycle; we returned to Cheaha State Park with my friends from childhood and their families; we attended a few holiday parties (better than attending zero holiday parties, a la 2020); we visited my folks at Lake Guntersville, and we experienced New Year’s Eve on Bourbon Street. Here are its 31 seconds: All done, 2021. You were not as we hoped.
In September, we camped out at Oak Mountain State Park near Birmingham, celebrated my bride’s birthday in Austin, watched horses race at Churchill Downs in Louisville, and enjoyed nearly a week at The Breakers in West Palm Beach for a legal conference. I’m gonna miss it.
The start of July 2021 saw another 5 flights cancelled, bringing the total Covid count to 37, but we found new ways to seek adventure, going camping in the rain in Alabama, beaching at Amelia Island in Florida, riding horses in California, and enjoying new experiences in our own neighborhood or backyard! Also, we added a new driver to our family.
